Juventus' midfielder Pavel Nedved has beat a strong field to be named as the World Player of the Year in a poll by magazine World Soccer.

The 31-year-old Czech earned more than a third of the votes in the magazine's 22nd annual poll, beating Dutch striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy of Manchester United and Spain's forward Raul of Real Madrid.

French striker Thierry Henry of Arsenal, who is favored to win FIFA's World Player of the Award next week, finished fifth in the poll.

Nedved was honored for his outstanding performances for Juventus as the Italian club retained the league title and reachedthe Champions League Final in May.

He missed the final through suspension but he played a major role in Juventus' defeat of title favorites Real Madrid in the semifinal.
