At least 16 people were killed and dozens more were wounded in a car bombing which rocked a police station in western Iraq on Sunday, medical sources said.

A US spokesman in Baghdad said no personnel working with the US-led coalition was killed or injured in the blast, which occurred at8:40 a.m. (0540 GMT) in Khalidiyah, 80 km west of Baghdad.

It was not known if the explosion, the latest in a series of assaults on the US-backed Iraqi police, was the result of suicide attack.

Iraq has witnessed a rampant wave of suicide bombings targeting those considered as coordinators with the occupation forces in the last four months, resulting in the death of over 150 civilians.

Khalidiyah is situated between the restive towns of Ramadi and Fallujah, known for the frequent ambushes and bomb attacks at US troops.

Most of the 197 US combat deaths since US President George W. Bush declared the major combat over on May 1 were caused in the area, heart of the so-called Sunni Triangle.
