Birth anniversary of noted Chinese educator marked

A workshop was held Saturday in Beijing to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of Jiang Nanxiang, a former president of the prestigious Qinghua (Tsinghua) University and a well-known educator in China at the sponsorship of the university.

A workshop was held Saturday in Beijing to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of Jiang Nanxiang, a former president of the prestigious Qinghua (Tsinghua) University and a well-known educator in China at the sponsorship of the university.

Jiang Nanxiang, a native of Yixing city, east China's Jiangsu province, was also a former vice-minister of education and minister of higher learning. He himself studied in the Department of Chinese Language in Qinghua between 1932-37 and Joined the Communist Party of China and, since 1952, he worked as president and Party chief of the university for 14 straight years.

Jiang died in 1988.

Jiang was officially praised as a proletarian revolutionary anda Marxist educator.

During the turmoil of "Cultural Revolution (1976-66)", Jiang feuded with leftist radicals and was persecuted.
