A senior lawmaker Monday called for intensified efforts for research on soft sciences, saying the research should serve China's medium- and long-term scientific development strategies.

Cheng Siwei, vice chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, said economic and social advancement requires scientific and democratic decision-making process, which will benefit from the achievements in soft science research.

Cheng also president of the executive council of the Chinese Society for Soft Sciences (CSSS), encouraged soft science researchers to provide more advice to decision-makers on social issues of vital importance.

Soft sciences do not focus on natural and social sciences themselves, but on correlation and integration of different scientific fields.

Established in 1994, the CSSS collects well-known scholars, business leaders and senior officials into its council.

Delegates to the CSSS conference are expected to discuss the national long-term scientific and technological plan, international scientific trends, China's economic and social development and decision-making process on scientific management.

Statistics show China has 1,634 research institutes on soft sciences, with 48,589 researchers. From 2001 to 2002, a total of 9,213 soft scientific research projects were completed, 1,022 of which were jointly carried out by Chinese and foreign researchers.
