Official sentenced to death with reprieve for taking bribes, embezzlement

The Intermediate People's Court of Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, has sentenced Liu Guo to death with a two-year reprieve for taking huge bribes and misappropriation of public funds.

The Intermediate People's Court of Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin Province, has sentenced Liu Guo to death with a two-year reprieve for taking huge bribes and misappropriation of public funds.

Liu was also deprived of his political rights for life and all his personal property was confiscated, according to the court verdict announced on Monday.

The court found that Liu, former deputy manager of the China Grain Reserves Corporation Changchun subsidiary, took bribes totaling over 736,000 US dollars and misappropriated 168,000 yuan in public funds during 1998-2002 period by taking advantage of hisofficial posts.

Liu also could not explain the source of some 2.87 million yuan(347,000 US dollars) worth of assets, according to the court.

Procurators are investigating 29 people who were allegedly to have bribed Liu, a court source said.
