Dow Chemical Company of the United States announced in Beijing that the company is considering building a major chemical plant in China to produce chloroform for the market. An in-depth evaluation study is under way, China Daily learned yesterday.

With annual sales of US$28 billion, Dow is a leading global producer of basic chemical products and the world's largest supplier of chlorinated organic products and services.

"The evaluation study for a chemical manufacturing facility in China is an indication of our commitment to this market," said Pam Butcher, business director for Dow's chlorinated organics business. "We believe this market has great potential for sustainable growth and future development. A new chemical facility will enable Dow to enhance its responsiveness to the fast-growing China market, and will strengthen our global leadership position in the fluorochemical industry."

"The study covers everything related to the possible construction of the new facility, including potential suppliers," added Frankie Ko, president of Dow China. But Dow declined to provide details about investment size and production capacity of the planned project.

However, the company said that different locations are under consideration, including its existing manufacturing site in Zhangjiagang, East China's Jiangsu Province, which is located on the Yangtze River near Shanghai.

"A new plant will enhance our presence in China and improve our competitiveness, allowing us to better serve our customers," Ko said.

Dow chlorinated organics is a global business, but it offers products and services on a regional and local basis to meet customers' product requirements.

Their products include chlorinated intermediates and chlorinated solvents.

Such products are used in fluorocarbons/fluoropolymers production, pharmaceuticals manufacturing, metal cleaning/degreasing, the chemical processing industry, dry-cleaning, coating and adhesive formulations, aerosol product formulation, paint formulation and stripping, and urethane foam blowing.
