Flag-hoisting ceremony kicks off Macao SAR anniversary celebrations

The red five-star Chinese National Flag and the emerald green lotus-design regional flag of the MacaoSpecial Administrative Region (SAR) were hoisted in the music of the Chinese national anthem Saturday morning to start a day of anniversary celebrations of the Macao SAR.

The ceremony held on the Golden Lotus Square to mark the fourthanniversary of the Macao SAR was co-chaired by Macao's Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah and Secretary for Security Cheong KuokVa.

Major officials from the Central Government's Liaison Office and Foreign Affairs Commission in Macao as well as the SAR government and residents witnessed the beautiful scene of two flags rising and flaunting in the glittering winter sun with the background of the Golden Lotus Flower, which was presented by the Central Government to Macao as a gift upon its return to the motherland in 1999.

Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People'sPolitical Consultative Conference Ma Man Kei, Director of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SARBai Zhijian, Commissioner of the Foreign Ministry in the Macao SARWan Yongxiang, Commander of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Garrison in Macao Liu Lianhua attended the opening ceremony.

Over 200 Macao citizens from various organizations participatedin a gymnastic performance after the flag-hoisting ceremony.

Later in the day, a grand celebration reception banquet will beheld on the Macao Tower. A symphony orchestra performance will be staged in the Macao Cultural Center in the evening along with a fireworks display.
