Britain announced Monday that it would purchase 140 million pounds (247 million US dollars) worth of updated air-borne missiles from the American firm Raytheon to equip the Royal Air Force aircraft.

The British Ministry of Defense (MoD) said a contract was signed on Monday with the US company for Paveway IV guided missiles to be built in Britain.

It said by signing the contract, it concludes a deal awarded in June to supply the Royal Air Force (RAF) with missiles that use upgraded global positioning technology to find targets in any weather.

The new missiles would replace laser-guided missiles and be used on RAF Eurofighter Typhoon, Tornado and Harrier jets, MoD said.

The missiles will be built by Raytheon's operation in Scotland with the British unit of French defense firm Thales among the subcontractors involved, MoD said.
