China has 1,395,000 handicapped children under seven years old, and the figure rises by 199,000 annually, according to official figures released by the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) Monday.

Among these children, 954,000 are mentally retarded.

These figures were part of a joint survey by the CDPF, three other central government departments and UNICEF, and was conducted among 60,000 children from various parts of the country in 2001.

The results of the Fifth National Census in 2000 were used as reference to calculate the figures, according to the news release.

The number of handicapped children under seven years old in this survey is 0.346 percent fewer than in 1987, it says.

Boys are likely to suffer more from their disabilities than are handicapped girls, according to the survey.
