Indonesia gives 5 international organizations access to Aceh

The Indonesian government gave five international organizations of the United Nations access to the rebellious province of Aceh for channeling aids, a senior minister said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The Indonesian government gave five international organizations of the United Nations access to the rebellious province of Aceh for channeling aids, a senior minister said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The five organizations are the International Red Cross, the UNESCO, the UNICEF, the UNDP and the World Food Program, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs and Security Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said.

The Indonesian government banned foreign organizations from channeling aids after the government decided to impose the military emergency status in the province on May 19, and all the aids for the Acehnese must be channeled through the Indonesia RedCross under the coordination of the Indonesian Social Affairs Ministry.

"The most important thing is that the government has decided togive the five international organizations under the United Nations the access to Aceh, indicating the transparency and accountability of the government in settling the Aceh problem, particularly during the military emergency status," said Susilo.

The minister also said that the government has also allowed other foreign organizations to have access to Aceh, although Indonesia had the experience that foreign organizations broke their promise of helping people suffering in the oil-and-gas rich province.
