The United Nations General Assembly has adopted a 3.16-billion-US-dollar budget for 2004 and 2005, which is nearly half a billion dollar higher than the 2002-2003 period.

The 191-nation assembly approved the new budget by consensus late last night, which was put forward by the assembly's budget committee.

UN budget director Warren Sach told reporters Wednesday that the half-billion dollars over the 2.65-billion-dollar budget for 2002-2003 are accounted for by currency and inflation adjustments.

He said UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan had requested a 0.5 percent increase in real terms, but the new budget represented a zero growth.

The largest contributors are the United States and Japan, with their contributions making up 22 percent and 19.5 percent of the total UN budget respectively. China will share 2.05 percent of thenew budget, up from the present 1.54 percent, and become the ninthlargest contributor.
