Meat from a Holstein sick with mad cow disease has reached markets in eight US states and one territory, the Agriculture Department officials said Sunday.

Dr. Kenneth Petersen, a veterinarian of the US Agriculture Department, said that investigators have determined that some of the meat from the sick dairy cow slaughtered on December 9 in Washington state went to Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana and Guam.

Earlier, US officials had announced that most of the meat from the sick cow went to Washington and Oregon, with lesser amounts toCalifornia and Nevada for distribution to consumers.

However, Petersen said that the meat "represents essentially zero risk to consumers."

He said the parts most likely to carry infection -- the brain, spinal cord and lower intestine -- were removed before the meat from the infected cow was cut and processed for human consumption.

The Holstein sick with mad cow disease is the first case of madcow disease in the United States.
