US may reward Cambodia for destroying missiles

The United States will reward the Cambodian government for its agreement to destroy 233 surface-to-air missiles, local newspaper reported Tuesday.

The United States will reward the Cambodian government for its agreement to destroy 233 surface-to-air missiles, local newspaper reported Tuesday.

According to a letter written by US Ambassador Charles Ray on Dec. 19, Cambodia could receive 233,000 US dollars, and the money would come from the US State Department's Small Arms/Light WeaponsDestruction Program.

Ray, however, cautioned that the money still must be approved by the US Congress.

The money, that could be available by the end of January, wouldbe used "to improve physical security and stockpile management that would be implemented through contractors," Ray was quoted by the Cambodia Daily as saying.

The decision to destroy 233 A-72 surface-to-air missiles was made by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen after he met with Ray on Dec. 15, and "is an effort to prevent them from falling into the hands of international terrorists," according to a government statement.

The United States promised to send weapon experts to help Cambodia destroy these weapons.
