China shortens time required for imported car registration

A computer-based network on imported cars will start operation in China on January 1, 2004, which is expected to cut the time required to obtain registration from the previous one month to 48 hours.

A computer-based network on imported cars will start operation in China on January 1, 2004, which is expected to cut the time required to obtain registration from the previous one month to 48 hours.

According to sources from the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), the network began trial operation in September, which has allowed the customs department to deliver specific information on imported automobiles to the traffic control sector within 48 hours.

By Dec. 29 during the test run, MPS received data on 33,515 imported vehicles passed by the General Administration of Customs through the network, of which 10,691 have registered number plates.

Statistics show that the number of imported automobiles reached100,000 to 120,000 in the first 11 months to November this year.

China has pledged to cancel the quota system on auto imports after 2004, as part of its commitments to the World Trade Organization (WTO).

Insiders consider the recent drop of import licensing charges will lower prices of imported cars and stimulate sales.
