South China island reports record air passenger volume

The Meilan International Airport in southernmost China's Hainan Province handled a record 6 million passengers in 2003, hitting the target two years ahead of schedule.

The Meilan International Airport in southernmost China's Hainan Province handled a record 6 million passengers in 2003, hitting the target two years ahead of schedule.

Passenger traffic volume at the airport has grown by 13 percent annually since it opened in May 1999 and hit five million in 2001.

More than 24 million yuan (2.89 million US dollars) has been spent in reconstruction and environmental projects at the airport.

Hainan is one of China's most popular tourist destinations because of its tropical environment and beautiful coastlines.
