West-East pipeline begins supplying gas to Shanghai

Shanghai, China's largest city and economic center, has officially begun receiving natural gas from the west-east gas pipeline. The project would provide 500,000 cubic meters of gas to Shanghai every day, to ease local shortages in winter.

Pipeline delivers natural gas to Shanghai
The West-East Pipeline began supplying gas to Shanghai commercially on Thursday, Jan. 1, marking the completion of the Eastern line and the official commencement of operation.

The pipeline is transmitting 500,000 cubic meters of gas per day from Jingbian in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province to East China's Shanghai city, helping ease the wintertime energy shortage in the city. Shanghai's mayor Han Zheng says the project is important for ensuring the city's energy supply.

Construction started in July 2002 and the project cost more than 200 billion yuan (24.1 billion US dollars). It is designed tocarry 12 billion cubic meters of natural gas a year from the TarimBasin in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and the Changqing gas field in Shaanxi to the eastern regions.

The eastern section, linking Shaanxi and Shanghai, was completed and started trial operations in October 2003. When the western section, from Lunnan of Xinjiang to Jingbian in Shaanxi, is completed, the Tarim Basin will replace Changqing as the main gas source on Jan. 1, 2005.

Construction of the West-East Pipeline began in July, 2002. It is China's longest pipeline with the largest transport capacity. The pipeline runs 3,900 kilometers from Tarim Basin in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region to Shanghai.

By the end of 2004, the West-East Pipeline will transport gas to 24 cities in eastern and central areas, with a total supply capacity of up to 1.5 billion cubic meters.
