Xiong Guangkai, deputy chief of the general staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, said Friday that 2003 highlighted conflicts and changes in six areas in the international arena.

The six areas included mono- and multi-polarizations, military reform, proliferation and non-proliferation, international terrorism and anti-terrorism, conflicts in world economic development and energy problems, said Xiong, also president of theChina Society for International Strategic Studies, in a speech at the society's annual meeting.

He said the conflicts and changes could further evolve in 2004,bringing about more uncertain and disturbing factors, and even leading to some unexpected emergencies.

However, Xiong said he believed international relations, as a whole, would remain stable, the world economy could see more rapid growth, and the process of multi-polarization and globalization would continue despite difficulties.

Established in 1979, the China Society for International Strategic Studies is a national academic institute on international strategic situations. The institute has forged academic ties with more than 100 institutions of international studies in over 50 countries.
