A businessman was robbed of about 80 kilograms of gold worth 8 million yuan (976,000 US dollars) on an expressway in northeast China's Liaoning Province Saturday.

A 37-year-old man surnamed Lin, from Guangdong, was stopped at 1 a.m. by a lorry blocking the expressway while he was driving a white Volkswagen Santana to the provincial capital, Shenyang, along Panhaiying expressway.

An Audi car pulled up behind him and five masked men with guns broke his window and stole the gold he was carrying from Haicheng City, said police.

Lin was injured on his head and the robbers destroyed both his mobile phones to prevent him from calling the police before they escaped.

Lin is in stable condition in hospital. Police said the investigation was continuing.
