Central gov't pushes for consultations

The State Council encouraged the Hong Kong government Wednesday to conduct widespread consultations on political development and local people to rationally discuss the issue and voice their ideas.

The State Council encouraged the Hong Kong government Wednesday to conduct widespread consultations on political development and local people to rationally discuss the issue and voice their ideas.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council Wednesday hailed the announcement of new measures by Tung Chee-hwa, chief executive of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, to develop the economy and improve administration as "active, enterprising, reliable and feasible."

But the spokesman hoped that Hong Kong residents would voice their opinions to the SAR government in a rational way.

The shape of the territory's new political system will directly impact the "one country, two systems"principle and Basic Law, the spokesman said.

It will also play a significant role on the relationship between the central government and Hong Kong, on the interests of Hong Kong people and the territory's long-term prosperity and stability.

Tung and the SAR government should also conduct thorough consultations with the central government before making detailed arrangements, the spokesman added.

The central government has consistently insisted Hong Kong should promote democracy step by step to remain prosperous and stable, the spokesman said.

The mainland/Hong Kong Closer Economic Partnership Arrangement will bring new opportunities to HK's economic growth, and Hong Kong should take every opportunity to develop its economy and improve people's living, said the spokesman.
