Beijing Electron Positron Collider to be reformed

As China's biggest scientific equipment construction, the project of major reforms on the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC) has been lately approved by the state and entered the stage of overall implementation, People's Daily reporter Liao Wengen learned from the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on January 8.

As China's biggest scientific equipment construction, the project of major reforms on the Beijing Electron Positron Collider (BEPC) has been lately approved by the state and entered the stage of overall implementation, People's Daily reporter Liao Wengen learned from the Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, on January 8.

The reform project on BEPC will cost an estimated fund of 640 million yuan and be finished in five years. Following the world most advanced pattern of colliders, experts will add another storage ring to the current one to enable electrons and positrons to move in their own rings and collide with each other at the colliding point. The number of electrons and positrons will be increased from the present one pair to 93 pairs and along with other technological measures the performance of the collider will be lifted to some one hundred times over the present level. Meanwhile, the Beijing Spectrometer (BES), as part of BEPC, will also be overhauled to improve precision and reduce system errors.

BEPC consists of the injector, the storage ring, the transportation line, the Beijing Spectrometer (BES), the Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF) and the computer center. A kind of advanced accelerator, it is one of scientific means to study the smallest unit of the physical world and the laws of inter-actions between them.

The BEPC National Laboratory is one of the world eight biggest high-energy accelerator centers, and the reformed BEPC will become one of the most world advanced double-ring colliders.
