China reports record tariff revenue

China's customs tariff income reached a record high of 371.157 billion yuan (about 44.95 billionUS dollars) last year due to fast economic growth, the country's chief customs tariff collector said Friday.

Mou Xinsheng, commissioner of the General Administration of Customs, said the figure represented an increase of more than 112.095 billion yuan (about 13.5 billion US dollars), or 43.27 percent,over 259.1 billion yuan (31.4 billion US dollars) in 2002.

Mou attributed the drastic rise to the country's fast and healthy economic growth, which bolstered China's growth of foreigntrade import and export.

"Despite the SARS outbreak in the first half of last year, the growth of foreign trade increased a lot," Mou said, adding that the increase in the amount of major tariff items neutralized the negative impact of the country's cutting of tariff rates.
