China's minority-dominated areas reported 1.1 trillion yuan (133 billion US dollars) of gross domestic product last year, 11.1 percent over that of 2002, according to the ethnic affairs authority.

China's minority-dominated areas reported 1.1 trillion yuan (133 billion US dollars) of gross domestic product last year, 11.1 percent over that of 2002, according to the ethnic affairs authority.

The figure was also a slight 2.6 percent higher than the national average and around 10 percent of the nation's total in 2003, according to the State Ethnic Affairs Commission.

China's ethnic areas include five autonomous regions and three provinces, of which the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's GDP growth rate was 16.3 percent over the previous year.

In 2003, the ethnic areas collected 89 billion yuan (11 billionUS dollars) of fiscal revenue, up 13.2 percent over 2002.

China has 56 ethnic groups with a total population of 1.3 billion, with the Han group accounting for 91.59 percent. The remaining 55 ethnic minority groups live mostly in remote, economically backward areas.
