Clash between Iraqi protesters, police causes serious casualties

Hundreds of Iraqi job-seeker protesters clashed with the local police and coalition forces Saturday in the southern Iraqi town of Ammara, the US military spokesperson in Iraq said.

Hundreds of Iraqi job-seeker protesters clashed with the local police and coalition forces Saturday in the southern Iraqi town of Ammara, the US military spokesperson in Iraq said.

According to the statement from the spokesperson, one protester was shot dead during the clash after he threw two grenades against the forces.

However, local hospital sources said that six protesters were killed by fire of the Iraqi police and coalition forces, and 11 others were wounded in the event.

Ammara is some 365 km away from Iraq's capital city of Baghdad, it is now under British jurisdiction.
