China tops world in port handling capacity in 2003

The handling capacity of Chinese ports leapt to the world top in the year 2003 by finishing a volume of 48 million standard containers, said communications minister Zhang Chunxian at a national communications work meeting held on January 11 in Beijing.

China's total container volume is 37 million standard containers in 2002, and the handling capacity rose by 11 million standard containers to reach 48 million in 2003, ranking the world first. Since container development reflects the industrialization degree of a country, China's world top handling capacity is a demonstration of its improved overall national strength, proving that the national economy is full of vigor.

The top ten Chinese ports in terms of handling capacity in 2003 are: Shanghai, Shenzhen, Qingdao, Tianjin, Ningbo, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Dalian, Zhongshan and Fuzhou. Among them, Shanghai and Shenzhen have exceeded 10 million standard containers, ranking world third and fourth respectively.

China's container handling developed rapidly in recent years, with its annual average growth rate reaching up to 30 percent since the ninth Five-Year Plan period (1996-2000).
