A small plane plummeted in the lakeErie shortly after take-off from Pelee Island, in Canada's Ontario province on Saturday, killing 10 people on board, police said Sunday.

The 10 people killed include nine Canadians and one American, police said, adding that Canadian police divers and Coast Guards crews have huddled to plan the recovery mission Sunday afternoon.

But the ice field covering the downed plane had shifted overnight making it difficult to pinpoint exactly where the plane had come to rest. Canada's Transportation Safety Board investigator Don Enns said a major investigation into the causes of the crash is expected to take several days.
