Several prisoners escaped from Maputo's top security jail on Monday morning, local media reported.
The breakout occurred when a fraud trial was being held inside a giant tent pitched inside the prison grounds.
Presiding judge Achirafo Abdul was dictating an interrogation summary into the trial record when the shooting began.
Several prisoners scaled a watch-tower set into the wall, and disarmed the policeman stationed there.
When other guards realized what was going on, they opened fire, shooting one prisoner in the leg. But three others made their getaway over the wall.
Indeed, this was not the first occasion gunfire had been heard there since the trial began on Dec. 12, 2003.
