The humanitarian situation in Angola significantly improved in the year 2003 due to joint actions carried out by the Angolan government and its partners, said the UN's acting resident coordinator Mario Ferrari here on Jan. 20.

Addressing the participants to the first meeting of the Humanitarian Coordination Group for 2004, Mario Ferrari explained that strategies and plans have been implemented for the stabilization of civilian people affected by the war, through the support given by UN agencies, non-governmental organizations and donors community.

Despite this improvement, he added, so many things are still to be done, such as the removal of mines and improvement of the country's access roads, in order to allow the connection with the communities, even in rainy season, as well as the free movement of people.

"Communities must be paid a special attention so that they can strengthen the mechanisms for self maintenance and development, so the consolidation of basic social services contributes as a factor of stabilization and meets the populations fundamental necessities", he said.

The government and its partners, he asserted, can help Angolans to enter definitively into a phase of renovation, if the encouraging results achieved in 2003 are consolidated this year, through the intensive and well directed humanitarian actions.

According to Mario Ferrari, the United Nations will progressively re-adapt its mechanisms of internal coordination, in order to monitor the new transition phase facing the country.
