M5.4 earthquake hits northeastern Japan

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit the Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Jan. 23 evening, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale hit the Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Jan. 23 evening, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the 6:01 p.m. (0901 GMT) quake. No tsunami warning was issued.

The focus of the quake was 70 kilometers below the sea level off the Haranomachi City, the agency said.

The quake measured 4 on the Japanese seismic intensity scale of 7 in some towns.
