Iraq asks three countries to return planes

Iraq has asked Jordan, Syria and Tunisia to return the planes it had sent to them in the wake of the second Gulf War or to pay compensations, Jordanian government spokeswoman Asma Khidr said in Amman on Jan. 23.

According to the spokeswoman, Iraqi Transport Minister Bahnam Boulis has threatened to halt any cooperation with the governments of Jordan, Tunisia and Syria if they failed to return the planes.

The minister accused the three countries of using the planes in domestic flights since 1991.

Khidr said that Iraq's request and Jordan's claims for storage fees are subject to the law but do not have political implications.

So far Jordan has not filed any claims for storage fees, which she estimated to be at 1.25 million US dollars, for the six Iraqi planes which have been sitting at Aliaa International Airport for 13 years now, she added.

She said the cost of revamping the planes will be higher than the cost of buying new types of their models.
