At least 34 killed in season's largest snowstorm in E. US

Mid-Atlantic states in the United States were blanketed by up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow Monday in what could be the season's largest snowstorm, which has been blamed for at least 34 deaths during the weekend.

Mid-Atlantic states in the United States were blanketed by up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow Monday in what could be the season's largest snowstorm, which has been blamed for at least 34 deaths during the weekend.

Dozens of airline flights were delayed or canceled and sporadic power outage were reported as the snowstorm dominated a region stretching from Atlanta north to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Schools and business were closed Monday in some states.

The National Weather Service issued winter storm warnings from southern New Jersey south through Delaware, Maryland, Virginia andthe Carolinas. An ice storm warning was issued for parts of central and northeastern Georgia.

North Carolina Governor Mike Easley declared a state of emergency after a freezing drizzle Sunday afternoon coated an earlier covering of snow, urging motorists to stay off the state'sroads and highways. The state sent 6,000 maintenance employees outwith over 2,700 pieces of equipment to de-ice the roads and more than 2,000 traffic accidents have been reported.

Up to 10 inches (25 centimeters) of snow was forecast for partsof Maryland and Delaware. Federal government offices in Washingtonwere open on an "unscheduled leave basis," meaning that employees with leave available can use it to stay off the roads, according to a spokesman for the Office of Personnel Management.
