The Indian government Tuesday night decided to ask the president to dissolve the country's lower house of the parliament, the Lok Sabha on Feb. 6, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The Cabinet, which met with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayeein the chair, adopted a one-line resolution that the lower house be dissolved on Feb. 6 after the passage of the vote-on-account.

After the cabinet meeting, Vajpayee drove to apprise President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam of the government decision.

The dissolution move will follow a brief five-day session of the parliament convened to pass the interim budget that will include a vote-on-account for meeting government expenditure for four months from April, the New Delhi-based NDTV reported.

Both the upper and lower houses of the parliament are expected to be adjourned on Feb. 5.

There will be no presidential address in the session as it would be construed as part of the winter session, which is yet to be prorogued, NDTV said.
