UN chief reiterates call for peace talks in Mideast

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan deplored on Jan. 29 the latest spate of bloodshed in the Middle East and urged the Israelis and the Palestinians to pursue an enduring settlement of their conflict.

In a statement read out by his spokeswoman in New York, Annan repeated his long-standing condemnation of those who resort to the violence and terror that have claimed innocent lives in the region.

"Once again violence and terror have claimed innocent lives in the Middle East," Annan said, "once again I condemn those who resort to such methods."

He reiterated his appeal to Israelis and Palestinians "to rise above feelings of anger and vengeance, however natural, and to devote all their energies to negotiating a true and lasting peace in which two peoples will live side by side, each in their own State."
