China's first heterogenous animal born in Xinjiang

A brownish gray female goat was lately born in Liushihu Township of Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The little creature, with a weight of 2.32 kg, a body length of 42 cm and a height of 35 cm, is the country's first cross-cloned animal.

China's first cross-cloned animal born in Xinjiang
A brownish gray female goat was lately born in Liushihu Township of Urumqi, capital of northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The little creature, with a weight of 2.32 kg, a body length of 42 cm and a height of 35 cm, is the country's first cross-cloned animal.

This is an achievement jointly made by Xinjiang Jinniu Biological Co., Ltd and the Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. Primary feature study by experts showed this is an ibex. Since ibex is an endangered species, its successful cloning bears remarkable significance to the protection of endangered wild animals in the future. So far, success is only made on gaur (a rare type of endangered wild ox found in India) and argali sheep in Europe in the field of cross cloning.

The experiment is to develop an embryo by a somatic cell of an ibex and an egg cell of a goat, then transfer the embryo, already grown to a certain stage, into the womb of a goat. Altogether 77 such transfers were made, including 40 on goat receivers, and 37 argali embryos on sheep. It is expected that another three ibexes and 14 argali will be born.
