Arroyo leads latest presidential candidates poll

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the latest presidential candidates poll by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) as the most capable of improving the country's economy.

Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the latest presidential candidates poll by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) as the most capable of improving the country's economy.

On the question of the most experienced presidential candidates in the May election to uplift the economy of the country, 33 percent of 1,200 poll respondents chose Arroyo, while 23 percent picked former Education Secretary Raul Roco as the second place, the ABS-CBN news channel reported Monday.

Philippine movie actor Fernando Poe Jr. won the third spot with22 percent of the ballots, followed by opposition Senator Panfilo Lacson, according to the survey conducted on Jan. 16-22.

In all age groups and social classes, Arroyo was picked as the best choice, and only in areas in Luzon in the northern Philippines except Metro Manila, Arroyo lagged behind Roco as the poll respondents' second choice.

However, in another SWS survey on the presidential candidates also conducted on Jan. 16-22, Arroyo overtook Roco to land second behind Poe, with 36 percent votes for Poe; 27 percent for Arroyo and 19 percent for Roco and 11 percent for Lacson.
