A poll conducted by nongovernmental organizations shows that the great majority of Macao residents support Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah, and have faith in China's "one country, two systems" principle.

The result of the poll that was exposed to the public on Tuesday suggested that 79 percent of the 574 surveyed people aged above 18 years old are satisfied with the Chief Executive, who came into the office of the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government since its establishment in 1999.

The survey was jointly run by the Union for the Construction of Macao and the University of Hong Kong. Through telephone interviews, the poll found 75.9 percent of the respondents approve of Macao's development since 1999, and 79.7 percent trust in China's "one country, two systems" policy which among others, ensures Macao to preserve gaming business after its hand-over.

Chairman of the Union for the Construction of Macao, Fong Man Tat, said that the survey shows that Macao residents were still not satisfied with the protracted unemployment situation, although the present rate stands at the lowest record of 5.5 percent.

Less than half of the surveyed people were satisfied with Ho's Policy Address for 2003, as many social problems such as unemployment, juvenile dropout and corruption are yet to tackle, said Fong.

However, under Ho's administration, Macao's economic growth has reversed a downturn and started to gather speed. The SAR's gross domestic product was officially estimated to grow at least 11 percent in real terms last year.
