The Democratic People's Republic of Korea Wednesday urged the South Korean government to take measures to screw up the inter-Korean tour project in Mt. Kumgang, warning it could suspend the project.

A spokesman for the DPRK's Asia-Pacific Peace Committee said the tour project run by the committee and South Korea's Hyundai Asan Co. is a symbol of the inter-Korean economic corporation and boost the reconciliation and cooperation between Pyongyang and Seoul.

However, the project is now experiencing an unprecedented slumpdue to the disturbance of the United States, the spokesman indicated.

"The United States is displeased with the project all along," the spokesman said.

"The South Korean authorities should take measures to revitalize the tour in protest against the US hindrance to the inter-Korean economic cooperation," the spokesman added.

South Korea's Hyundai Group launched the cross-border sightseeing tour to DPRK's northern scenic resort of Kumgang Mountain in November, 1998. It has attracted 600,000 travelers so far. Due to the sharp decrease of tour incoming, the Hyundai Groupis in substantive debt of tour payment to the DPRK.
