Eight cities bid for 2009 athletics world championships

Eight from eight countries are bidding for the 2009 athletics world championships, it was announced by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) at Monte Carlo on Feb. 4.

Eight from eight countries are bidding for the 2009 athletics world championships, it was announced by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) at Monte Carlo on Feb. 4.

The eight candidates are Berlin, Brisbane of Australia, Brussels, Casablanca, Daegu of South Korea, New Delhi, Split of Croatia and Valencia of Spain.

"I am delighted not only to have such a large list of impressive candidates, but that they are so widely spread geographically," said IAAF President Lamine Diack.

The IAAF will provide detailed documentation regarding the bidding and evaluation procedure to the candidates in the coming weeks. The final decision will be taken at the meeting of IAAF Council for which the venue and date are yet to be confirmed.

The 2005 World Championships will be held in Helsinki while Osaka will play host to the 2007 meet.
