Iranian President Mohammad Khatami onMonday met visiting Prince Charles who is on the first visit to theIslamic republic by a member of the British royal family.

The two, smiling broadly, shook hands and exchanged greetings infront of dozens of photographers and cameramen, and then went into private talks.

This is the first British royal visit to Iran for more than 32 years, since before the ousting of the imperial regime by the Islamic revolution of 1979.

Prince Charles visited the quake-devastated Bam city in southeastern Iran on Sunday.

Charles, heir to the British throne, was heading a small delegation in a "completely unpolitical" and "purely humanitarian role" as patron of the British Red Cross, according to British diplomatic sources.

Earlier on Sunday, Charles paid a surprise visit to the southernIraqi city of Basra, strolling around one of Saddam Hussein's former palaces to inspect British troops and meet with local dignitaries.
