CEO of Indian Wipro Industries: Chinese software industry can't catch up with India's

Azim Premji, CEO of Wipro Industries, a renowned Indian software company, said in his speech at a conference of Indian industry and commerce held in UAE that it was impossible for Chinese software companies to catch up with their Indian counterparts so long as Indian software companies maintained their leading position.

Azim Premji, CEO of Wipro Industries, a renowned Indian software company, said in his speech at a conference of Indian industry and commerce held in UAE that it was impossible for Chinese software companies to catch up with their Indian counterparts so long as Indian software companies maintained their leading position.

Azim Premji said Chinese software industry was at least three to four years behind that of India. As long as Indian software companies retain their advantage in core technology, China will never be able to catch up with India.

There are 800, 000 employees working in the software industry in India. Azim Premji thinks the industry has potential to create another 2 million job opportunities directly or indirectly by 2008. From 2002 to 2003, the Indian software industry created a total revenue of US$16.5 billion, accounting for 3.2 percent of India's GNP. If the current speed is maintained, the industry will hopefully generate 7 percent of India's GNP by 2008. Last year India's export-oriented software industry generated 8 percent of the country's gross foreign exchange revenue and the figure is expected to reach 30 percent by 2008, thus making the software sector India's only industry ahead of developed countries.

Azim Premji is cited as the richest person in India. His Wipro Industries is one of the most famous software production bases in India.
