A series of joint antiterrorism drills were held Thursday at central Japan's Nagoya port, first such event since Japan appointed officials in January at its major ports to take charge of crisis management.

A total of 161 people from the Japan Coast Guard, the Aichi prefectural police, the Nagoya Regional Immigration Bureau and other concerns held joint drills aboard the domestic ferry Ishikari in which it was assumed there had been a report of a bombing on an international cruise ferry, Japan's NHK television reported.

During the drills, staff from the coast guard dived into the sea to look for suspicious-looking objects under the ferry, while a special police squad searched the inside of the vessel wearing bulletproof vests and holding reinforced plastic shields.

According to NHK, on the premise that a suspicious-looking person was found hiding in a locker, the squad of five people, holding guns, approached and mock-arrested a man acting as a suspect.

Drills were also conducted on the premise that the immigration bureau and the Nagoya customs house had found another suspicious-looking person leaving the ferry with a bomb. A riot squad from the prefectural police disposed of the mock bomb.

In January, the government appointed officials at the ports of Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokohama, Osaka and Kobe to take charge of crisis management, as part of an effort to prevent terror attacks by international groups.
