Hamas founder and spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin on Monday criticized the expected meetings between Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Palestinian officials, saying they aim to deceive the world's public opinion.

The meetings Sharon is planning to hold with Palestinian officials "are just used as a curtain to hide the truth and mislead the world," Yassin told reporters in Gaza City.

"Sharon wants to remove the international pressure on him and wants to get out of the crisis that he put himself in," he said.

The Hamas leader also accused the Israeli prime minister of having no intention to make peace with the Palestinians.

"In fact he doesn't implement anything on the ground, therefore he presents hypothesis to get himself out of the crisis," Yassin said.

He said that Sharon's statements about evacuating Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip "were made due to the continuous strikes of Palestinian men of resistance and approved the failure of Sharon's security theory."

"Any unilateral steps of disengagement with the Palestinians Sharon is planning to carry out would never end the whole cause and would never give the Palestinians their legitimate rights," Yassin said.

"The Palestinians now understand what is exactly needed to be done by Israel. They want complete withdrawal from all the occupied territories and dismantlement of all Jewish settlements," he said.

Yassin also slammed the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) for deciding to resume peace talks with the Israeli government after reports said that preparatory meetings had been held to arrange a meeting between Sharon and Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei.
