Trilateral meeting urges more intensive reforms in EU
Germany, France and Britain on Wednesday urged increased innovation and reforms for the social systems in European countries.

Only so can Europe remain one of the economically strongest areas in the world, said German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in a joint press conference with French President Jacques Chirac and British Prime Minister Tony Blair after their two and a half hours of trilateral meeting in Berlin.

The problems of the three countries were similar and the reform processes were well under way, said Schroeder.

Chirac mentioned the aging European population and called for increased investments in research and education.

Blair said the European governments should react promptly as the "economic cosmos around us is changing quickly."

Schroeder said he would inform the European Union commission and the Irish government that is holding the rotating EU presidency about the results of the controversial meeting.

"We want to dominate nobody, " Schroeder added.

The meeting has raised fears among some smaller European countries which are worried that the big three could try to dictate Europe's agenda.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi railed against the Berlin meeting Tuesday, saying Europe "has no need for any directorate."
