International Olympic Committee (IOC) inspectors Tuesday held a seminar in Beijing, offering the 2008 Olympic organizers advice on hosting the world's largest sporting event.

Hein Verbruggen, chairman of the IOC's Coordination Commission for the 2008 Olympic Games, and IOC Olympic Games executive director Gilbert Felli gave lectures on the roles and responsibilites of the government in hosting the Olympic Games, and important operational issues regarding transportation, infrastructure and security.

Liu Qi, president of the Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), thanked IOC officials for their "candid" advice and sharing with BOCOG the experiences of the previous Games.

"Your lectures not only enlightened us on the special requirements of hosting the Olympics and but also help us to improve our future preparatory work," said Liu.

Earlier, BOCOG's executive vice-president Liu Jingmin briefed the IOC officials of the lastest development in Beijing's preparations for the 2008 Games and the key tasks set for 2004.

"Beijing has entered the 'second' phrase of its preparations for the 2008 Games," said Liu Jingmin.

"From 2004 to 2006, it is the period for full-scale preparations."

Verbrugeen on Monday spoke highly of Beijing's work in venue construction after an inspection tour of the National Stadium and the National Swimming Center, two major venues for the 2008 Games, in north Beijing.

"We're extremely pleased to see how fast the work has been advanced," said Verbruggen.

The Chinese capital has promised to finish construction of its sporting facilities for the 2008 Games at least a year ahead of time so test events could be held during 2007.

Verbruggen said he was confident that Beijing would achieve its goals.

"We're very sure that, as it has been promised by BOCOG, the works will be finished by the end of 2006, which is an absolute record," said Verbruggen.

"I don't think there's ever been a Games being ready with their construction so early," he added.
