Macao to promulgate law on communicable diseases prevention

China's Macao Special AdministrativeRegion (SAR) will soon promulgate a new law on the prevention and control of communicable diseases, bringing 42 genres of communicable diseases under the government's mandatory disease control.

Thursday's Macao News Daily quoted its source with the Legislative Council as saying that the SAR government's bill on the prevention of communicable diseases has been passed across theboard in the legislative. It is expected to come into effect 15 days after the decree is promulgated by Chief Executive of Macao SAR Edmund Ho Hau Wah.

The law will give the government more rights to respond to an outburst of a communicable disease. For example, the law will demand government-owned and private hospitals to report diagnosed cases to the concerned government departments, and allow the government to enact mandatory separation measures to prevent a disease from spreading.

Secretary of Social and Cultural Affairs Fernando Chui Sai On said on Wednesday that in order to safeguard Macao citizens' legitimated rights of freedom and privacy, the SAR government proposed setting up an appealing and confirmation system in the Legislative Council to monitor the government's enforcement of thelaw.

Under the law, patients suspected or diagnosed of the enlisted 42 genres of diseases are obliged to accept mandatory separation measures. Otherwise, they would take the rap. However, it is the right of the patients to keep anonymous.
