Chinese doctors will be asked to get familiar with the Anti-Doping Regulations coming into effect on March 1 in order to reinforce the fight against the use of banned substance, said an health official.

Wu Mingjiang, director of the Ministry of Health (MOH)'s Department of Medical Administration, said doctors in all levels of hospitals should read the new regulations, the first ever anti- doping law enforced in the country, and receive related training.

"The Ministry of Health will formally inform hospitals that doctors, including surgeons, physicians, and the pharmacists, are required to read thoroughly the prohibited list of the banned drugs," said Wu.

The new regulations authorizes the country's sports administration to formulate, revise and make public a catalogue of banned drugs in cooperation with the central government departments in charge of food, drug, health and commerce, and the Customs. The list also referred much to the 2004 version of the prohibited list published by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

"Drugs in the list are used by doctors in practice as they treat common patients but they should know the proper practice methods when treating an athlete," Wu said, adding that doctors should avoid prescribe any medicine containing substances in the list.

"As the new regulations go into effect, doctors should be aware that they are also involved in the war against doping," Wu said.

The new regulations, containing 47 articles in six chapters, were published on February 3.
