China's 60 percent cell phones to be exported in 2004

In 2004 China's cell phone production is expected to hit 170 million. About 100 million of them - a proportion of 60 percent will be exported.

In 2004 China's cell phone production is expected to hit 170 million. About 100 million of them - a proportion of 60 percent will be exported.

At the Key Work Communication Conference of Electronic Information Industry 2004 held on Tuesday, officials with the Economic Reform and Operation Department of the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) said that demand for communication equipment represented by cell phone has motivated the rapid growth of electronic information industry. Up to the end of 2003 China produced 186.44 million cell phones and sold out 183.21 million, making cell phone the number one electronic product both in terms of production and sales.

MII cautioned that since technological advancement lowered the market access threshold for the enterprises the competition in cell phone market is becoming increasingly fierce. MII, together with the related departments, will reinforce the work on the dovetailing and coordination of cell phone production this year and map out the annual guidance plan.

It is also learned that after several years' endeavor the market share of domestic mobile phones has increased from 5 percent in 1999 to 56 percent in 2003. The monopoly of cell phone market by foreign-invested companies and foreign products has been fundamentally changed. The rapid development of cell phone industry also provides Chinese accessory parts industry with plenty of market space. As for now the compatibility ratio of homemade cell phone component parts has been raised to over 50 percent, thus greatly reducing cell phone production cost. Meanwhile in order to catch up with the development of cell phone industry component parts production companies have stepped up the work on technological transformation, thereby raising the overall industrial technology and production scale to a new level.
