Powell to visit India, Pakistan, Afghanistan

US Secretary of State Colin Powell will travel to India, Pakistan and Afghanistan beginning the week of March 14, the State Department announced on March 5.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell will travel to India, Pakistan and Afghanistan beginning the week of March 14, the State Department announced on March 5.

"He (Powell) will be traveling to India, Pakistan and Afghanistan, where he will meet senior officials and political leaders to discuss a wide range of bilateral and security matters,including regional issues," spokesman Adam Ereli said at a news briefing.

During his stay in India, Ereli said, Powell will be talking about the next steps and beyond in the US-Indian "strategic relationship."

The secretary will be talking about the war on terror and a wide range of other issues in Pakistan, while in Afghanistan, he will focus on the consolidation of economic and political reconstruction, according to Ereli.

"It's important to point out that we're going to India and Pakistan because of the important close bilateral relationships that we have with each of those countries," Ereli said.
