Too much sleep could kill, say doctors in the northern China province of
Hebei
who have operated on a man who had to sleep 19 hours a day.
Experts with the Union Hospital based in Tangshan city said the man was suffering from severe sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) and could die anytime during his sleep if no treatment was given in time.
Meng Qiang, a 35-year-old villager from Qianxi county, could fall asleep while crossing a busy street. He weighed more than 90 kilograms, which doctors said was "far too much" for his 170 centimeters height and made it difficult for him to move around.
The sleepy man was always in low spirits and could not concentrate on any work.
Life became more difficult for him and his baby girl after his wife divorced him last year, saying she had heard enough of his "thundering snores" and was fed up with his "not being able to earn his own bread".
His two sisters sent him to the hospital in mid February for an operation on the nose and throat.
Meng left the hospital Thursday with a smile, looking as an agile young man 10 kilograms lighter than before, said one of his two sisters.
"And he's sleeping nine or ten hours a day now," she added.
