More than 50,000 people are feared homeless after tropical cyclone Galifo hit the north of Madagascar on Sunday, local authorities estimated Monday.

"We believe there will be between 55,000 and 100,000 homeless, and that figure includes those who have not yet recovered from Elita," a senior official said here at a meeting attended by foreign diplomats, donors and other international organizations based in the island.

Elita is another cyclone which hit northern Madagascar last month, leaving 29 killed, 100 injured and 44,000 homeless.

Galifo arrived overnight on the island near the city of Antalaha blowing at 120 km per hour, with gusts as high as 180 km per hour, according to state weather office director Alain Razafimahazo.

Madagascar called Monday at the meeting for international aid after Galifo caused huge damage.

"Faced with this situation, and contrary to the norm, we are appealing to you to show solidarity... even as the cyclone is still on the island and damage assessment has not been finished," Foreign Minister Marcel Ranjeva told the attendees.
