China's industrial output increased by 16.6 percent year on year in the January-February period, according to statistics released Wednesday by the NationalStatistics Bureau (NBS).

In February, the value added of China's industries reached 370.93 billion yuan (44.85 billion US dollars), up 23.2 percent over the same period last year.

The telecommunications and metallurgical industries are the major propelling forces for the increase, according to the NBS. InJanuary and February, the two industries contributed 13.1 percent and 12.3 percent respectively to the total increase of the industrial output.

Meanwhile, the power industry, chemical industry and transportation equipment manufacturing industry each contributed five percent to the total increase.

In the first two months of this year, the export of China's industrial products kept increasing at a speed of 26.3 percent. However, the growth rate was 4.3 percentage points less than that of the same period last year, said a NBS spokesman.

The sustained increase of China's industrial output has raised higher demand for power supply, which resulted in fast increase inpower generation.

In January and February, China's power output totaled 306.8 billion kwh, up 15.3 percent over the same period of last year. The electricity output from coal-fired and nuclear power plants increased by 17.5 percent and 26.2 percent respectively, but hydro-power generation dropped 3.5 percent.
